In Her Shoes: Beauties Behind the Brains
It’s not everyday you get to sit in a room with amazing, beautiful, brown women and listen to them tell you the key to their success. It’s not everyday you get to sit in the same room with the person who inspires you and listen to them tell you about their struggles, tipping points, current successes and future goals. Today I had the PRIVILEGE of sitting in the Galapagos Art Space in complete sponge form as I listened to Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily, Demetria Lucas of Blood Sweat and Heels and author of A Belle in Brooklyn, Latham Thomas founder of “Mama Glow” and author of Mama Glow: A Hip Guide to Your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy and Anthony Dickey of Hair Rules New York.
This event was to highlight the 5 year anniversary of the In Her Shoes Blog, founded by Renae Bluitt. This was a genius way to celebrate such a milestone. The room was filled with unbelievably beautiful, powerful, resourceful women. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my Sunday. This was very obvious because when I arrived to the venue, I was the first person on line. Early bird gets the worm.
When I heard about this event, I knew I had to attend and learn everything I could from Claire Sulmers. She is the inspiration behind my blog. It is amazing to see a positive woman of color doing exactly what you want to do. With that said, when she began to speak, I pulled out my MarshBar’s Closet notebook and wrote down every word that came out of her mouth. Like me, Claire didn’t start out doing what she wanted to do. After applying to numerous magazines and getting rejected, she decided to drop everything, quit her job, and move to Paris. Stepping out on faith seems so scary, but so worth it once you look back on where you’ve been and where you are now. Claire made sacrifices to get to where she is now. She didn’t shop for 2 years! She landed an internship at Paris Vogue making next to nothing to survive on. Claire described her tipping point for Fashion Bomb Daily when she was asked to be a guest blogger for YBF and Necole Bitchie. Today, Claire gave my brand its tipping point when she followed me on Instagram on both accounts AND posted our picture together on both accounts. I was in FULL ON GROUPIE MODE!
Advice to bloggers from Claire: Do everything! No excuses. A lot of the fashion industry is about networking and being seen. She encourages us all to make goals. “If you don’t have goals, you can’t score… Write down your goals. Once you achieve them, make new ones.” She suggest we speak what we want into existence. Words are powerful. We have to speak positivity over our career. Lastly, she encourages us to listen. “When God or the Universe answers, you have to be ready to receive it.” My next goal? Guest Blogger on Fashion Bomb Daily!
Demetria Lucus is a Belle in Brooklyn. Looking for a voice similar to her own, she created a brand that many women could relate to. 10 years and 2 books later, Demetria has made it! What I loved about what she had to say during the panel discussion was the importance of having your own voice. We often get caught up in the generic blog talk. Your voice is what separates you from other bloggers. Find your voice, and you keep your audience. In my head, Demetria personally spoke to me when she said, “You can’t get rich working for someone else.” As I edit this blog post from my 9-5, I realize how true that rings. Success comes from building your own brand, not by helping someone else build theirs.
There is a lot in store for Demetria this year. Not only is Blood Sweat and Heels rumored to return for a second season, there are talks of her book, A Belle in Brooklyn, being turned into a TV series!
I had the opportunity to share some words with this gem, Latham Thomas. This journey started over 10 years ago. Imagine you’re expecting a baby and you’re told that the doctor you want to see in October, is not available until May of the following year. Like the other ladies, Latham searched for what she thought would represent herself. When she could not find it, she created it. Mama Glow is an informative outlet for women who are expecting. The pregnancy journey is filled with misconceptions and Latham clears a lot of things up in her book, Mama Glow: A Hip Guide to Your Fabulous Abundant Pregnancy. Bet you didn’t know that when you’re “eating for two” it doesn’t mean 2 full meals, just an additional 300 calories. She is all about creating a healthy lifestyle. Latham is sure to make time for herself whether it is yoga or weekly massages. She encourages this for all because it is good for keeping you centered.
Renae and Essence Magazine put together an amazing goody bag for all attendees. It is filled with amazing hair products from Pantene, Ouidad, Hair Rules, Eden Body Works and the latest Essence issue. Hands down, BEST event I’ve been to! Check out the next few blog post to see what I wore and to see my fashion stylecons from the event!
